Writing + reading is a joint experience. Preserving a line you should have cut, because it makes YOU feel good, is bad.
There’s a 12-letter word for willful self-pleasure like that. I won’t spell it out, but here it is with no vowels: mstrbtn.
Focus on your reader, and the experience they’re going to have.
Do your work, and most of their work.
Be that kind of writer.
(And if it really is a clever line, store it in a text file, created for exactly such writing)
